I began my training in 1979 at Cowan Heights School under Kenpo black belt instructor Jim Moore. The style of Kenpo taught was the same as that introduced in Newfoundland by Dave Jackman. I have spent many years studying this style under several instructors, including Senseis Mike Foley, Peter Walker, Boyd Cannings, Allan Humber and Don Brennan. I received a black belt in that system in 1990. Following this and under the instruction of Sensei Don Brennan I explored many avenues of martial arts, including American Kenpo, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing and Kickboxing. This was all in an effort to discover the most functional offensive and defensive skills set to accommodate all the ranges of fighting, the kick/punch, close quarter, and ground fighting arenas.
In 1996 I co-founded the Mt. Pearl School of Martial Arts and in 2000 I co-founded The Dojo. Both clubs are still operated today by my former partners. From 1992 to 2004 I served as secretary/treasurer and president with the Kenpo Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Inc. Through this organization I was able to participate in many seminars and tournaments with a variety of martial artists and organizations from Canada and the U.S. This included the World Kobudo Federation. As a WFK member I gained access to many martial arts resources that have been instrumental in my growth.
In 2006, I received levels 1 and 2 coaching and refereeing status with the Council for Amateur Sport Kickboxing (CASK), gaining valuable refereeing experience at two provincially sanctioned kickboxing events. I am currently an executive member with CASKNL.
Also in 2006 I founded Elton's Fighting Systems, a new venture for me that reflects my high level of interest in continuing to learn about and teach martial arts.
The martial arts have provided me with tremendous physical and mental benefits over the years. I know they can be just as beneficial to you with a little effort on a consistent basis. It's really not that hard.
